Jonathan & Rebecca Schlosser, brother and sister, ages 14 and 12, challenged themselves to assemble supplies for 500 school kits for children in need around the world. With determination, and the help of their congregation, First Mennonite Church, McPherson, they accomplished their goal. On Sunday, September 11, they will report on their mission project during the worship service. Following a meal in the fellowship hall, the congregation will celebrate by assembling the 500 kits from their raised supplies.
This story began from the sadness of a church closing. In the declining population around rural Pawnee Rock, KS, the Bergthal Mennonite Church closed its doors and disassembled the historic building. Lynn Schlosser, Jonathan & Rebecca’s mother, was the final pastor of the congregation. But the congregation was also determined that the good work begun so many years ago would live on into the future. Proceeds of the demolition established mission seed grants. Jonathan & Rebecca were awarded a mission seed grant for their plan to assemble 500 school kits. Now, with the family being part of the First Mennonite congregation, they celebrate meeting their goal.
Inspiration in this story can be found on multiple levels. It is a story of historical connection to Kansas history, a story of resurrection as an ancient good work continues to live on, a story of rural Kansans impacting the world and the lives of others they will never meet, a story of hope in the emerging generation of young people, a story of two young people willing to challenge themselves and others to make a difference in this world.
Come worship with us at 10:40am, September 11 to hear more on this story. Stay to eat lunch with us and be part of the celebration as we assemble the school kits.Filed under news | Comment (0)
